The 'Mixed Thoughts' Cleansing Oil. My Verdict?

When it comes to budget cleansers of the oil kind, nothing can come close to my much loved Una Brennan Renew Cleansing Oil, but then came the discovery of another which appeared all too similar in terms of price, plant-based ingredients and popularity. The contender in question? The Body Shop Camomile Silky Cleansing Oil. It landed a mixed bag of reviews, and when reviews are good, they're really good but every now and then I come across a write-up on, again how beautiful this oil seriously is, but with some not-so-great results - I put it to the test and my verdict is in...

As my most favoured form of cleansing, it smells, and feels incredibly dreamy worked into the skin and provides a silky slip for a  deep-down, cheek knuckling massage which, when hot-clothed off, doesn't leave things stripped or dry, but in fact nicely nourished and comes suited to all skin types. Plus, there's the pump - can we please take a moment to appreciate the pump?! So far, so good, right? Well, the results not so much. It wasn't too long before my complexion became riddled with blemishes and under-the-skin bumps, in places where I'd never experienced under-the-skin bumps before, and I had an idea in which direction I'd be pointing the finger.

But let's talk the inci list as here's where I believe the problem lies, soybean oil being first - something I can't say I've previously checked other products for, but I hear it's a bit of a problem maker and can cause skin to flare up. Then there's fragrance, and a bit of it - mainly essential oils, which can trigger sensitive skins, but parfum is up there too, usually something my skin doesn't agree with. Now this cleanser only stepped into my routine for a mere three weeks, it was the only 'new' thing I'd introduced and nothing else had changed in terms of skincare, makeup or diet around the time, so I feel pretty confident that I can put my spot of bother down to this - if you need an idea, then watch from here onwards, go for full HD and opt for the big screen, there you'll see my skin at the worst it's ever been and trust me, it took some real guts to put that video up. A good 6+ months on, I've since given it a second chance, but the same results came from it and once again, it's weened its way to the back of my bathroom cabinet.

Alas, all pennies are not washed down the plughole as it's stepped in as a leg-shaving oil to pad out for the fact my L'Occitane Almond Oil is almost out. It works a treat and I'm chuffed I can put it to good use, even if for the complete opposite job than originally intended for...

  1. I've been using this cleanser for quite a while and I haven't found this gave me any problems, but at the same time we are completely different skin types and what may work for me, might not for you! You could always find another use to it, ex. body oil.

  2. I had exactly the same problem with this (and weirdly also ended up using to shave my legs too!) I even stupidly gave it another last weeks and brokeout immediately. I think it's the fragrance and/or essential oils :(

  3. I thought I was the only person that didn't like this cleansing oil! The texture of my skin has changed so much since I started using this - I need to learn to stick with what works.

  6. Ah exactly Caterina - everyone is different, but I'm glad it works for you! As I say, it's stepped in as a leg-shaving oil and it works pretty well ;-)

  7. Ah I'm glad it's not only me Emma - my skin really didn't like it! Hey, it does the trick when it comes to achieving smooth legs though, right? ;-)

  8. Ah I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't get along with it Laura! I agree, I've never experienced such a change in my skin - hope you find one you love :-)

  9. Don't get me wrong, if you find one you love (like me and my Una Brennan), they're, IMO, the best form of cleansing alongside balms - just this one didn't work out for me :-)

  11. Ah, I thought I was the only one who was getting clogged pores from the oil! But I haven't since been able to get rid of the clogged pores problem... How were you able to?

  12. I've been using it for a week now, and I noticed some under the skin pumps as well! My skin has been really good lately and this is the only thing I've changed. It's a shame, I thought it was a great make-up remover..oh well..
