The Real Life Instagram Face Filters

Dear Instragram, I owe it to you - with the help of my favourite filters, you not only transform every picture into a prettier version of itself, but you make the whole selfie-taking process a heck of lot more flattering (kind of), to the point where I've thought long and hard about how to achieve this when you're not there to lend a hand. Case in point, here are the selected fair few products that get my complexion as close as possible to the complimentary lighting effects that a Valencia veil creates over my face (that's just my most selected filter FYI)...

It's all about that base, no trouble - cue Diorskin's Star Foundation. If you haven't seen my full write-up, you can do so here - I've already touched on the fact that it's a face filter in a foundation by capturing light in all the right places, enhancing features and amping up the radiance whilst reducing shine, dullness and imperfections. Seriously, it's a beautiful, beautiful thing. Another healthy complexion mimic comes from Kevyn Aucoin and the Sensual Skin Enhancer, which can be applied in multiple ways; as a concealer, a foundation, a highlighter or made into a tinted moisturiser. I blend it on areas where a touch more coverage is welcome, it blurs out anything that's not, leaving me fresh faced and flawless.

With the ability to set things off cake-free, a dusting of all three members in the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette creates an overall soft-focus face just like any filter would. L-R, we've got Dim Light, the all over peachy-beige toned setter, with a little more shimmer is Incandescent Light, which defuses light on the high points then Radiant Light the bronzy one, adding definition around my non-existent cheekbone area. Bringing brightness with that same soft-focus effect is their Ambient Lighting Blush in Radiant Magenta; a marble-like combo of Ambient Lighting powder and fuchsia pink cheek colour - I promise it doesn't look as scary on as it does in the pan, just enough to transfer a nice glow to your apples.

To translucently tone down the shine, Daniel Sandler's Invisible Blotting Powder is a good place to start. Locking your base into place, it refreshes makeup whilst mattifying the T-zone without looking too powdery. Last up, Diorskin's Nude Tan Healthy Glow Enhancing Powder does what it says on the compact - pairing subtle shimmers with flesh toned hues for a fresh glow, the pinky harmonies help highlight and the peach deliver that healthy hit, meaning I'm almost one step closer to a #NoFilter selfie...
