A Day in Skin Food: #1

Me and food get on really well, probably a bit too well. I'd go as far as saying eating is my best hobby, in fact, my at-home nickname is 'The Fridge Hoover', true say - and so I'm welcoming a new feature to the blog that involves all things foody, though of the healthier sort, the good stuff to benefit the skin. One day of the week, I'll document three meals, snacks or drinks (and hope to catch a snap before devouring said foods) be it all in the same day or picked out from different days, sharing what's so good about them and why. And so without further-a-do, here's my first instalment - I'll be leaving my weekend scoff-yourself-silly ritual to your imagination...

Breakfast. I'm not usually one to opt for breakfast (unless pancakes are on the menu) but to get something down me I'll whiz up a smoothie. It tends to consist of a large handful of frozen mixed berries, a good glug of almond milk, a teaspoon of chia seeds and a sprinkling of wheatgrass powder. I ditched the dairy long ago (cheese however, goes in and on everything. Nom), as the growth hormones present in milk have been shown to cause acne, and since waving goodbye to it from my diet, my skin hasn't been half as blemish-prone. One of the best sources of Omega 3 comes from chia seeds - they can be thrown into most meals being pretty tasteless, and as another supplement, wheatgrass is bursting with chlorophyll and vitamins, and can also be added to all sorts. 

Lunch. As a veggie, (pescatarian if you will) I aim to get most of my protein from fish, and although smoked salmon has a higher salt content than grilled, it makes a bloomin' good salad when served up with leafy greens, seeds, boiled eggs and a drizzle of lemon and olive oil, see above. I whipped this up as a super-healthy midday meal and it was pretty filling, washed down with a glass of OJ did just the trick.

Dinner. I like eggs, okay? Again, they're good'uns for protein, especially as I don't get it from meat. This is one of my faves to throw together; fresh tomatoes cooked in olive oil with basil leaves - when piping hot, make a well in the centre, crack in an egg and place a lid on the pan until the egg is done (I hate a runny yolk so I break it but you can leave it whole). Add a side of crusty bread drizzled in olive oil and get dippin'...

  4. Sounds tasty! I love breakfast smoothies, except it's too cold for me to enjoy one with winter here. I'm with you on the dairy bit too, except my reason is that I don't like the taste of most dairy products - except for cheese of course (<3!!!), and milk or half and half in my coffee or milk teas only. My sister bought chia seeds not too long ago - the first impression I had on them was "bad tasting superfood" (like kale), but I think I'll give them a try after reading your post!

  7. They're not the easiest thing to drink in the winter, but I'm forcing myself ;-) Agreed on the taste of dairy - yack! Ah they hardly have a taste at all, great to just chuck into things!
